My last post featured Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, the largest man-made Palaeolithic mound in Europe. It highlighted the flooding that takes place during periods of high rainfall. Well, the floods have now arrived and this is Silbury Hill pictured on the day of the Winter Solstice, 21 December 2019, almost surrounded by water after the local Winterbourne stream inundated the depression around its base. Imagine again what the structure might have looked like when it was faced in gleaming white chalk in prehistoric times... perhaps we might get some idea when it snows. Watch this space!

This itinerary covers amazing historic sites, but I wonder if the schedule feels too rushed to fully enjoy each location’s unique charm. watch full episode
